Prior to arriving in Mexico you will want to be familiar with the national money.  If you are driving down in a car you will want to buy Mexican pesos on the south side of the border.  If you wish, you can get enough pesos in any bank ATM machine to comfortably get you to Alamos .

The following are photos of peso notes and coins. For the most part, one dollar US is worth ten pesos (plus).

1000 Pesos (6 1/8" x 2 5/8") - You probably won't see many of these as the ATM machines you will use only dispense bills of 500 pesos or less.

500 Pesos

200 Pesos

100 Pesos

50 Pesos - An inch shorter in width than all of the above.

20 Pesos - Same size as 50 pesos.  New 20 peso notes are smaller than what is shown.

Peso Coins - Above, the coins left to right are 20, 10, 5, 2, and 1 pesos.  They all have an outer ring. Below, the coins left to right are 50, 20, 10, an 5 centavos.  The centavo coins do not have an outer ring.

Since you took the time to read this we can assume you have some concern about money.  On your trip from the border to Alamos you will want to pay close attention when you pay for gasoline.  The people pumping gas will often give you incorrect change.  Regardless of what they say, the amount you owe is exactly what the gas pump indicates.

In Alamos you will not have any problem when making purchases.  Local Alamos merchants will chase you down the street to return change you accidently leave on their counters. "Alamos is a community." This is not always the case outside of Alamos.
